Training - Why Bother?
by Dr. Michel Classe

To understand the benefits of a good training program, we
must first define what training is: the dictionary defines
training as "any activity leading to skilled behavior."
That broad description could cover everything from a
physical conditioning program to learning a new task at work
to understanding new life-coping skills.

Let~s examine both sides of this issue. While training of
any kind certainly does take some time - is it really a
waste of time? Whether it~s a physical training program, or
a class on how to manage your money, or learning a new
software system at work, training will certainly take time
out of your day that you could have spent doing something
else. But are you getting value for the time invested in
that training?

Imagine if Michael Jordan had attempted to step onto a
basketball court without following a regimen of training
that not only conditioned him as an athlete but taught him
tactics and strategy that augmented his natural talents.
What if Steve Jobs or Bill Gates suddenly decided they had
as much money as they~d ever need, and stopped learning new
skills, new interests and new methodologies for their
industry? These people are leaders in their fields - for a
variety of reasons - but one basic fact underlies their
accomplishments- they train, and continue to train, no
matter the level of success they achieve. They~re interested
in new ideas, new thought processes, new ways of approaching
old tasks - thus they continually examine and learn and
explore new avenues - they educate themselves constantly.

A good training program offers far more benefits than just
increasing information or generating awareness of new
methodologies. Training can identify areas of weakness that
need improvement, offer opportunities for networking and
exchange of new thoughts and concepts, as well as expanding
horizons and developing ideas that were previously
unconsidered. Training opens doors.

Some of the most successful people on the planet believe
that a lifelong training program is a critical component to
achieving your life goals - without an ongoing training
program - in a wide variety of subjects - you are committing
yourself to an inability to adjusting to the constant
changes life throws at you. Without learning news skills,
new thoughts, new concepts and new approaches to old
problems, your mind will become stagnant and rigid, unable
to adapt and retain the flexibility needed to deal with
life.

A well-designed training program can kindle a new excitement
in every part of your life - from a renewed commitment to
physical activity, to taking control of some part of your
personal life that~s been neglected for too long, to adding
personal growth and a different direction in your
professional life - training can have a beneficial effect in
many areas.

So why bother to implement a life-long training program in
all aspects of your life? Because it can impart wisdom in
many forms, and we call all use more wisdom in our lives.

Training should be a lifelong goal in everyone~s life - to
stop learning is to stop growing, and the person who stops
growing will soon be left far behind as the rest of the
world progresses. Those who cannot adapt to changing
conditions will soon stagnate and die.
