Dealing with Acne

The scourge of teenagers everywhere, acne can be a major
blow to anyone's self esteem. And yet it's the most common
skin problem today.

Eight out of ten people will suffer from acne, most
frequently during their teen years. But acne can strike at
any age, and many adults struggle with it as well. Most
often appearing on the face, acne can erupt anywhere you
have skin, frequently affecting the shoulders, back, and
chest.

Pain, embarrassment, and even disfiguring scars are the
legacy of acne. For many, the teenage breakouts are just the
beginning of a lifetime of severe scarring.

Common Causes

What causes skin breakouts? Over the years many mistaken
ideas have caused a lot of misunderstanding. For example,
for years chocolate was thought to be a culprit. The truth
is that acne is more often caused by hormonal changes and
excess oil in the skin.

Hormones known as "androgens" help skin produce necessary
oils. When the androgens are out of balance too much oil
results which can trap dirt in the pores, leading to pimples
and blackheads. Too much oil in the hair can also be a
problem if the hair is long enough to touch the face.

Heredity also gets into the act, as does an individual's
personal hygiene. Keeping your face as clean as possible is
helpful. Removing makeup nightly and washing your face after
active sports or other activities that cause sweating is a
must.

Treatment and Prevention of Acne

There are many different treatments for acne. You probably
already know that you can purchase many treatments from over
the counter. If you have serious acne and these treatments
are not working for you then you might want to talk to your
doctor about a prescription.

There are also many natural remedies, some of which you can
create at home. Still, prevention is better than any
treatment, and while most people won't be able to avoid
breakouts 100% of the time, you can dramatically decrease
the occurrence.

You should also get your acne in control. If you have severe
acne that is not being helped by over the counter
treatments, then you should see your doctor for advice.
Cutting down on the number of outbreaks can also help you
prevent acne scarring.
